If you’re curious about how the G10 ultra mobile PC looks like, then here are a couple of angled shots to help tease you further. Word has it that the G10 will not surpass the $500 price point, and will ship with some sort of storage, a 10″ display, HSDPA support and some version of Windows. I remember seeing this ad in a newspaper that claimed: “Now there is an easy answer. Laser Hair Removal!” It showed a pretty woman with great legs, and I can only assume that her bikini wax was somehow done with lasers. Well, I have no idea how lasers can remove hair, but apparently they can restore hair. This is exactly what the X5 HairLaser is designed to do. This little gadget is designed to fit in your hand like a tiny scalp massager, and can blast “15 distinct points of coherent laser light directly to your scalp at the optimum power and wavelength”. Somehow, all these lasers are supposed to promote hair growth. However, it doesn’t work all at once, but it is a treatment that requires 10-15 minutes, three times a week. It may not be nice to look at or fun to use, but at least the horridly named EM-SOL1GIG portable media player by eMotion is great pals with the environment. Not only do the built-in solar panels provide enough renewable juice for the 5.5″ x 3.0″ x 1.0″ device to play AVI videos at 25 frames per second and video game emulators on its 320 x 240 display, but they also power up the unit for playback and viewing of music (MP3, WAV, WMA, ADPCM), photos (JPG, BMP, GIF), and text files stored on the device’s 1GB of internal memory or on SD cards up to 2GB in size. The EM-SOL1GIG can even be used to charge the lithium batteries tucked inside external devices such as digital cameras and cell phones. XM-I of Singapore are keeping themselves occupied as they have just revealed information on a wireless version of the next generation X-mini Capsule Speaker. There is no word on whether this new speaker will rely on Bluetooth or radio frequency to get audio signals across, but at least you don’t have to worry about tangled mess (although new worries light sound quality and a shorter battery life do come into play). Judging by it’s size, I would say there isn’t much point in harboring too much hope on the X-mini speakers to pump out audio at a decent volume and quality. Meant for casual use at best. When I was in Seattle last summer, I had the opportunity visit the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame. As I entered in, I saw a very large sphere that had many images from old sci-fi shows being projected on it. I only bring this up because I thought that sphere was unique to the Science Fiction Museum, but this spherical screen is available for anyone. All they have to do is order the Pufferfish PufferSphere, which can be set up with some inflating. Which leads me to wonder how they get the projections up there. It appears that after a client inflates the PufferSphere on the easy tote base, there is an internal projection unit that takes care of that. (Read the full post about ‘Pufferfish Puffersphere’…)
This story brings together some of my favourite things: cats, design ingenuity and intelligent young women kicking ass. Plus, it shakes off the stereotype that British people don’t care about teeth. (We do, just not our own…) Seventeen year old British college student Rachel Gilbert has reached the final of a national competition, the Ideas Igloo Roadshow, with her design for feline false teeth. They look a little ghoulish, but have a noble purpose: “When animals suffer broken or rotten teeth, they have had to be removed,” Rachel told her local newspaper, The Sheffield Star. “The gum can become infected and they find it difficult to chew food. Apple has at last divorced RAW camera support from operating sytem updates, a frankly clunky and ridiculous way to add compatibility for new camera models. With digital camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.0, a slew of new models have been added, and in a download of just 2.3Mb. While the update quashes some security issues, what we care about is the list of updated models, copied and pasted below for your reading leisure. You’ll need the latest version of everything for the update to have any effect, but if you do, this miniscule download will let you view RAW files in Aperture 2, iPhoto and directly in the Finder. I tried it with Nikon D60 NEF files and everything worked. It doesn’t even require a restart. (Read the full post about ‘Apple Updates RAW Camera Support’…)
How many times have you gone out to start your car (truck, SUV) only to find that you’ve done something like left your headlights on? This of course means that you’re going to have a fun time trying to get it started again. Your best bet is to grab a pair of jumper cables (always carry these) and try to find someone willing to give you a jump. However, if you have a Porta-Jump, you won’t need to worry about messing with any of that. This is one of those gadgets that will become almost a necessity to carry around, provided it works as well as it boasts. Those taking domestic flights on Qantas can enjoy sending and receiving text messages as well as emails sometime in the near future. The trial lasting from April till January next year involves a Boeing 767 that has been fitted with the necessary hardware to facilitate this exchange of information, with Airbus A330 jets to receive similar treatment later this year. Such modifications will enable cell phones and portable devices to be used without causing any interference to the aircraft systems or ground communication network. You won’t be able to make or receive voice calls though, but the thought of Mario Karting with another person on the other end of the aisle is very, very enticing.
