In this week’s Wired Gadget Lab podcast, Dylan Tweney and Jose Fermoso talk about the incredible volumetric 3-D display from USC that is the first real device for simultaneous viewing of holographic images. They’ll go over this medium’s intriguing new possibilities, including creepy medical applications and engineering diagrams.

In addition, they’ll discuss the latest reviews, including the disappointing Sony Ericsson Walkman phone, the new RockBand gadgets for the Wii, and will provide an up-to-date evaluation of the LG Viewty multimedia phone.

Apple’s latest iPhone 3G will be more profitable than any other product in its line-up, which includes iPods, Macs, and iTunes. Despite a price tag that is half of the previous iPhone, the numbers of markets targeted around the world are a major contribution to the company’s success.

Reducing the component cost helps the new iphone to exceed the 50 percent level achieved by Apple’s most popular media players, according to a preliminary study by research firm iSuppli Corp. “Apple’s ipod and iPhone products typically are priced about 50 percent more than their (materials and manufacturing) costs,” iSuppli said. “With the new iPhone sold at a price of $199 and the estimated subsidy of $300, Apple will achieve an even higher margin. ISupply estimates manufacturing costs for Apple’s new high-speed iPhone totaled $173, compared with $265 for the original iPhone, released one year ago for about $500 with no subsidy. After what it called “component price reductions,” the initial iPhone carried a cost of $226.

Wireless phone carriers are expected pay a subsidy of about $300 to Apple for each of the new iPhones, iSupply said. Note that this is another important factor which would contribute to Apple’s Profits. The cost estimates don’t include software development, packaging, shipping or included accessories like headphones. The phone will go on sale in 21 other countries on July 11, at varying prices, all subsidized by carriers.

On the other hand, The blackberry Bold 9000, the latest addition to Research In Motion Ltd.’s (RIM) BlackBerry smartphone arsenal and its first with 3G support, won’t hit the streets until the next couple of months, opening the door for the Apple iPhone to get its 3G device into users’ hands first. According to a Wall Street Journal report, phones based on the Android software won’t hit the market until roughly the fourth quarter, mostly due to Google’s 30 plus partners having trouble hitting deadlines. Google had initially projected that Android-based devices would hit the market around the second quarter. The Android delays put another arrow in the 3G iPhone’s quiver, since its Apple will have its 3G device in the hands of the smart phone hungry public before Android-based devices reach the market.

With the population growing and the amount of trash piling up from it, we’ve started finding a need to reuse old items.  One new way to do so is to take old discarded plates and create something like this cute little lamp.  This particular design was done by Denis Belenko and Dmitriy Nkolaenko and posted on their site this month.  They created two different styles, one is extremely contemporary and the other much more childlike and playful.  Which just goes to show with these little lamps you can create any style you like.

I know plates are always the one thing at my local flea market that there is always an overabundance of.  Most people get tired of several plates breaking and then having mismatched sets, so they either toss them in the trash or take them to a flea market in hopes that someone will get some use out of them.  Although this is yet another design you can’t purchase, it is another one that wouldn’t be that difficult to remake.  I’m sure there are plenty of tutorials on how to drill a hole into fragile objects.

Leave it to space nerds with money to come up with the world’s highest resolution visualization system. NASA’s Advanced Supercomputing Division at Ames has created the 128-screen hyperwall-2, a mega display capable of rendering one quarter billion pixels. Hyperwall-2 measures 23- x 10-feet of LCD goodness, and is powered by 128 GPUs and 1,024 processor cores with 74 teraflops of peak processing power. To top things off, 475 terabytes of storage keep the system rolling. All in all, hyperwall-2 has more than 100 times the processing power of its poor predecessor, hyperwall, from 2002. The elder hyperwall was unavailable for comment and is most likely on an alcoholic bender somewhere, complaining about “kids these days.”

Today’s news about the iphone, starting with the rates: Rogers has announced plans in the $60-$115 (Canadian) range. In Sweden, plans will start at $50 and in Norway they’ll be as high as $80 (link).

Launch preparations: Apple as reportedly ordered 17M handsets, which is huge of course, but given the anticipation and the much lower price point, it’s likely that they will sell all that.

MMS support: For those who care, it’s rumored to be in the works.

Universal Remote Control: Not surprisingly, the idea of a display-only universal remote control makes sense: you can program any remote and mimic exactly its functionalities. There are people already working on applications, but I remember that Apple filed a patent a while back… That will give me a pretext to get an ipod touch and dump my current iPods. Not official yet

Talk about a radically different GPS navigation system with portable media player capabilities - the CDT GPS PMP (so many Three Letter Acronyms!) amazingly retails for just $102. It features a 3″ touch screen display and does the whole gamut of audio and video formats. Interesting to note the hand grips located at the side though, does this mean you’re getting this for a fast driver since you’ll be holding onto the CDT GPS PMP for dear life while giving directions to your destination?

D-Link has plans to roll out a new SIP/DECT dual-mode VoIP phone as well as a small-size home security surveillance system next month, helping the company expand its current lineup of 802.11n draft 2.0 products. I guess this is but a logical progression for D-Link considering how they’ve been in the networking business for a fair number of years already. Home surveillance systems are doing pretty well no matter which country you’re in, since every man would want to protect his castle.

It’s time to take a long, hard look at where we’re headed as a society. No, really — we’ve got office chairs coming to kill comradeship, specially designed lapboards made to keep you sedentary for as long as humanly possible, and now we’re looking at the perfect device for keeping Earthlings in bed for days on end. The EasyChair WorkStation line of products essentially puts your laptop on wheels, and the adjustable boom arm ensures that you can reach the keys / trackpad regardless of which side you wake up on. We’re hearing a bedpan attachment is in the works as well, but we’re feeling entirely too lazy to actually check.

I’ve discussed the dedicated hosting, benefits of dedicated hosting in the past and this time, I’m going to review a dedicated hosting provider that I discovered on Internet while hunting for a dedicated servers.

The other thing that impressed me is the price. If you compare their price with other new hosting providers in the industry then you’ll realize that NetHosting is offering great price for dedicated servers. Their dedicated servers are affordable and they’re good enough to take on the load of a busy site. They also offer Rack Space with 100Mb connection and the prices are competitive. Apart from the hosting, they also offer web design, Internet marketing and eCommerce services. However, I was mainly interested in their web hosting. It goes without saying that I’m highly impressed with the information that I discovered.

After going through their site, I searched on Internet so as to look for the reviews for them and I was happy to see that there were no bad reviews for them. While deciding a web host, it’s always advisable to look for the reviews of previous users.

At the end, if you’re looking for a web host that has established himself in the hosting industry and offers hosting services at an affordable price then you should consider NetHosting as they’ve everything that is required in a good web host.
