We have our iphone 2.0 today, there are companies announcing unprecedented new mobile applications to coincide with it and one of them is Phanfare. Phanfare unveils an application today that will allow users to snap photos and share/distribute them widely on the internet simply by using their phone.

They say that the corporates are a heartless lot. But a ‘good Samaritan’ amongst them called Doro has come up with a couple of GSM mobile phone models specifically designed for the elderly. These are the HandleEasy 328gsm and 330gsm respectively. These mobile phones have clearer displays so that the elderly people using them don’t have to strain their eyes while looking at them. The buttons on the keypad are also large and well defined so that the aged have better control over the keys they press.

We got a nice helping of slides dropped on our virtual doorstep this evening, fleshing out Dell’s upcoming netbook — which they seem to be calling the “Dell E.” Um, Eeenteresting name choice, but that doesn’t seem set in stone, and there’s plenty else going on here to ponder over. Dell’s breaking the Dell E into two device types, a 8.9-inch model clearly meant to take on the Eee 900, and the 12.1-inch “E Slim” which actually looks positioned to take on the macbook air and X300, at a mere 0.8-inches thick, though perhaps in a lower-end capacity. Even the 8.9-inch model will have some distinctions, with E Classic model for super low-end use, and E Video and E Video+ for more RAM, larger flash storage, webcams and Bluetooth in the + model. Rollout looks to be slated for August for the E, August / September-ish for the E Slim, and a followup for both of those in October of WWAN, with WiMAX after that. Dell even has a second version of both devices slated for Q2 2009, but that’s all we know about those so far. Perhaps most interesting is that all of these run Linux and Windows XP, and while it’s not clear if there’s a full-featured Linux OS onboard, there does seem to be an instant-on, Foleo-esque Linux included on all of them called BlackTop. We’re not sure if there’s any relation to Splashtop, but the janky-ass interface and email / calendar / contacts apps seem to be telling us no. BlackTop will support WWAN and WiFi, and Dell plans to move the 2.0 version to the Latitude and Vostro lines in a year or two. Peep the slides below for all the gory details. Oh, and the price? LG’s new Flatron W2252TE is a 22″ widescreen lcd monitor that touts a 45% power reduction compared to other models, helping you save up to 40 watts during usage which ultimately results in a lower electricity bill at the end of every month. Well, guess the Flatron W2252TE can lay claim to being the “greenest LCD monitor on the market” at this point, although I’m pretty sure that there will be many other manufacturers clamoring for that title in the near future. NXP Semiconductors can lay claim to the “fastest high-bandwidth cellular soft modem in the world” with the Nexperia Cellular System Solution PNX6910. It can apparently hit phenomenal data transfer rates of 150 Mbits downlink and 50 Mbits uplink, boasting support for multi-mode LTE/HSPA/UMTS/EDGE/GPRS/GSM capability. Guess lag in games will be a thing of the past if this cellular modem lives up to its promise, while downloading full length high definition films will take but mere minutes. Now to wait for the rest of the technology world to catch up with this modem to ensure that no bottlenecks exist anywhere…

Asus may be a little optimistic, or maybe just cocky, but they believe that they can make a 1430% increase in sales this year over last year with their Eee PC. Yes, they are predicting that they can make 5 million sales this year, and although it is unclear as to whether this just includes the Eee PC, or if this prediction incorporates many of the other products that have been given the Eee PC label, it is still very optimistic either way.

Or is it? Last year Asus had the whole of the market, which considering their 350,000 sales wasn’t massive; however the market for low cost ultra portable computers has increased massively, and Asus president Jerry Shen (who made the above prediction) also said that they expected this marked to grow to 10 million sales overall. If you then consider that HP’s Mini-Note has only been available for a few months, that Acer and MSI have yet to release their Eee PC-competitors, and Dell hasn’t even officially announced its entry into the marketplace, they may just have a good chance at getting the predicted 50% of the market.

I personally think that although they may get 50% of the market at most, 10 million sales is probably a bit to many, but we will see.

Remember the ultra small Dell notebook? Well, apparently it will be known as the Dell E. That’s not too creative now, eee’s it? Still, there will be a couple of models under this banner with the 8.9″ version targeting extremely entry level users, while the larger 12.1″ E Slim will attempt to take on the macbook air market at just 0.8″ thin. The E will be out this August, with the E Slim to follow slightly later. These devices already have successors, but Dell has not shed further light on what improvements we can expect so we’ll just have to wait until Q2 2009. Prices start from $299 upwards.

“I was wondering which portable hard drive was good enough to stand up to the life of a student. Something that can take a few bumps and not be harmed. It doesn’t have to be huge in capacity, but I need one larger than 80GB. I’d obviously like FireWire and USB 2.0 if possible, but I’m not trying to spend a fortune here either.”

Another month, another round of layoffs over at Moto. This time, we’re seeing 120 out of the 600 positions in Motorola Labs — the unit responsible for researching pretty much everything ranging from handsets to radio technology — slashed; another 180 are “being reassigned to work in individual business units.” According to the company, the moves from Moto Labs “will help R&D teams work with their business partners to optimize R&D investment and focus on projects that deliver the greatest value for Motorola,” though your guess is as good as our as to what that actually means. Granted, we wouldn’t normally support hacking off a good part of your innovation department, but considering that it’s been stuck in fail mode for far too long, maybe this really is for the best.
