On my recent jaunt to the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx to see the Darwin garden, I was too early for more than a few of the blooms in the Botanical Garden’s huge formal rose garden. It’s named for Peggy Rockefeller, source of the river of gold required to keep it going, but the rose garden’s true designer is landscape architect Beatrix Ferrand.

Ferrand worked her garden magic early in the 20th century. A woman in what was at the time a man’s profession, Ferrand is not as well known as she should be. No Wikipedia entry! A perfect project for some feminist green soul out there. Ferrand is not mentioned on the Botanical Garden website either — I learned that she designed the rose garden from a recorded tour guide.

A formal rose garden may not be your style. Not mine either; I like my roses rambling rather than clipped and managed to a fare-thee-well. But June in this enormous rose acreage is the best possible time and place to plan your own rose growing.

Chalk another one up for Sharp. The company has landed yet another partner willing to utilize its solar panels in order to make news, wow onlookers and give Mother Earth a modicum of a break. Napa Valley winery Far Niente has flipped on its self-coined Floatovoltaic installation, which was developed by Thompson Technology Industries and installed by SPG Solar. Nearly 2,300 Sharp solar panels were secured for the job, and we’re told that the array generates 400 kWs at peak output, which “significantly offsets the winery’s annual power usage and provides a net-zero energy bill.” Don’t expect that coveted bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon to be any cheaper as a result, though.

Pictures of a new Motorola slider phone have surfaced.  The phone, reportedly named the ZN5, sports a monster Kodak-branded 5 megapixel camera.  However, in a forehead slapping moment, the camera does not have autofocus.

Other specs include the phone’s ability to run on quad-band, however the data speeds are limited to EDGE (again, come on Motorola!).  The ZN5 runs on the MOTOMAGX platform, which is Linux-based.  The phone also has Bluetooth built in, along with 100MB of internal space plus a MicroSD slot.  The touch wheel used for navigation also doubles as a 5-way directional pad.

First things first: considering the huge amount of press garnered by a recent position art scam, this here could indeed be just another spoof to get your hopes up. That being said, we’re pretty sure no one with any level of decency would do such a vile thing on Easter Sunday, which is precisely when the above bunny was purportedly created from waltzing about with a Magellan GPS and a digital camera. The artist himself admits that what you see above is a slightly cleaned-up version of the actual path, but we’re told that any edits that occurred had no huge bearing on the outcome of the piece. You be the judge.
