One little fact about Solid State Drives (SSDs) is often overlooked. There’s no speed penalty for size. While a 2.5″ laptop hard drive typically spins at just 5,400 rpm compared to 7,200 rpm for a bigger 3.5″ desktop unit, there is no such compromise for solid state memory. The only limitation is how many chips you can squeeze into the box.
Which is why we expect the World’s Smallest claims to come thick and fast in the near future, starting with this 256GB SSD from OEM supplier Super Talent . The FSD56GC25H (try pronouncing that) is just 12.5mm (0.5″) thick and has, according to Super Talent, also been ruggedized. Prices will depend on how much resellers decide to charge, but with new SSDs popping up seemingly every day now, it can’t be long before these are standard kit and cheap, too.

Pandigital has joined the touchscreen frenzy with its PanTouch digital photo frame lineup. Touting a smudge free touchscreen display, PanTouch has a special frame matting that will resist fingerprints in the viewable area and also allow for easy control and quick access to its operations. The new frames are available with a 7-inch, 8-inch or 10.4-inch display and feature Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity for transferring photos from the digital frame to a PC.
The 7-inch and 8-inch models both have 15:9 widescreen ratio with a resolution of 428 x 234, 128MB of internal memory, 6-in-1 memory card reader, a standard USB port and a mini USB port. Plus, it doesn’t just display digital photos but it can play digital music and videos as well. The 10.4-inch on the other hand would likely appeal to the more serious photo enthusiasts as it offers a nicer 1024 x 768 resolution and 512MB of internal memory.
The PanTouch lineup is set for release in May and are expected to retail for $119 for the 7-inch, $169 for the 8-inch and $249 for the 10.4-inch model.

A few images have recently turned up, courtesy of the se-nse blog showing off what they are claiming to be the highly anticipated Sony Ericsson P5, which is also know as Paris. The images are said to be screenshots taken from the official press video, but we will have to “wait two weeks” to get a glimpse of the video in action.
The P5, Paris will be running UIQ 3.3 and feature a full keyboard that will slide-out below the display. Other features include a large touchscreen display, 3G support, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth, USB and built-in GPS. The handset also has two cameras; a 5-megapixel camera on the back with a second front camera for video calling. Other items worth mentioning is the P5 will come with Opera Mobile 9.5, Google Maps and possibly WayFinder 7.0 pre-installed.
The phone, although hard to see in the pictures is said to be about 16-18mm thick and “is quite wide” which should be good news in relation to the usability of the slide-out keyboard. The P5 is expected to be announced before the end of May, but no mention of when it will actually be available for purchase or just how much it will retail for. Keep reading for one more pic…

Kyocera may not be a well known mobile manufacturer but it sure does know how to make its presence felt in this already crowded mobile phone industry. So, when it decided to release a new mobile handset, it announced not just one but three new models, all running on CDMA networks – the Neo E1100, Mako S4000 and the Adreno S2400.
Unfortunately aside from the weird sounding branding that goes with each of these mobile phones, Kyocera didn’t include many innovative features. In brief, here’s a lowdown on each of the new phones from Kyocera.
First up is the Neo E1100 sporting an illuminated design with “breathing” pipe, a 2.2-inch QVGA display, external OLED display, Bluetooth 2.0, Speaker-independent voice recognition and 1.3-megapixel camera with its own dedicated key. The Neo E1100 offers up to 220 minutes of talk time. Next up, the Kyocera Mako S4000. Sporting an elegant design has a large keypad with both internal and external display, Bluetooth, picture caller ID and runs for 250 minutes when used for calling. The last model which is the Adreno S2400 seems to be geared for users with a rugged lifestyle. With a sporty and simple design, this phone has large keypad, Bluetooth, advanced voice activated dialing with speaker-independent voice dialing. It could last up to 200 minutes of talk time.
Since Kyocera has not reached an agreement with any cellular provider yet, pricing is not yet available. But with the simple features that those phones have, it won’t probably cost too much.

Poor Matt, this guy has it so hard. If he isn’t having relational trouble with Julie Taylor, he’s disappointing his dad, his coach (Julie’s dad, conveniently enough), his team, or the entire town of Dillon, Texas. Last thing the guy needs is an iphone telling him he’s wrong, so we’re going to pin this Friday Night Lights upside-down incident on Zach Gilford, the man behind the cute-shy quarterback legend that is Matt Saracen. You disappoint us, Zach.
[Thanks, EJ]

Filed under: Misc. gadgetsLooks like Dell’s plan to trim $3B in costs from its budget is going to involve even more job cuts than the 8,800 already announced — speaking to analysts today, Michael Dell said that his company’s management had “identified a very significant opportunity” to cut costs, and that it was “aggressively going after it.” That means even more jobs will be slashed, apparently — a further 1,000 this quarter at least, but Dell wouldn’t say what the total would be in the end, just that it would be more than 8,800. Dell went on to say that no part of the company would be considered sacred as cuts are considered, and that Dell’s brass thinks that it’s “begun the journey to transform the company.” Cutting jobs is one way to do it, sure — but might we suggest focusing on delivering great products would also help?

The same week that Nokia Siemens Networks unveiled its LTE solution for North America comes a little nugget from Ericsson: the M700. Hailed as the “world’s first commercially available LTE-capable platform,” it promises peak data transmissions of 100Mbps down and 50Mbps up, which will undoubtedly be the next best thing since sliced bread. Reportedly, initial devices based on the unit will be ExpressCards, USB modems, etc., and of course, it supports bandwidths between 1.4 and 20MHz and the oh-so-exciting 700MHz bands. Unfortunately, a commercial release isn’t set to happen until 2009 — with products “based on the platform” not scheduled until 2010 — but to its credit, samples of ASICs will be ready to roll sometime this year.
