At CTIA Wireless 2008 Microsoft has officially confirmed what we mentioned earlier today: the unveiling of Windows Mobile 6.1. In addition, the company shared the Windows Mobile 6.1 spotlight with a look at a new version of Internet Explorer Mobile that “brings the quality of desktop web browsing to phones” by supporting H.264, Adobe Flash, and Microsoft Silverlight. According to the company, the update to Internet Explorer Mobile will be available on Windows Mobile phones by the end of 2008.

Here’s an example of a full webpage being rendered on Windows Mobile

Here’s another example. I’d like to see what it looks like on a standard candybar-size phone, though

Joel’s Opinion
Ok, so Windows Mobile 6.1 has been officially announced and so has some mysterious new “update” to Internet Explorer Mobile. For me, I’m even more disappointed with the announcement than I was earlier. First off, why tease us with “desktop web browsing” on phones coming by the end of the year? Didn’t the iphone already steal that spotlight? Of course, the iPhone’s browser doesn’t do Flash or Silverlight, but it probably will by the end of the year since the apps will start flowing in June. Second, there’s a “minor” update to Internet Explorer Mobile bottled in 6.1 This is no doubt what Microsoft had planned before the iPhone showed up, but the company has now been feverishly working on the new version coming by the end of the year. Why does it take a competitor to come out with something innovative before Microsoft allocates the resources to improve on something that was basically left out to die (Internet Explorer Mobile)?
Regardless, I’m happy to see the update come. I wish it was available today, but I’ll wait my turn and hope it’s out sooner than the second quarter of 2008.
